  • Co-authored The African-American Guide to Living Well with Diabetes with Constance Brown-Riggs.
  • Edited and contributed to Pleasure and What Your Mother Never Told You About S-E-X by sexual-health expert Dr. Hilda Hutcherson.
  • Contributed to Dr. Brenda Wade's Power Choices: Signposts on Your Journey to Wholeness, Love, and Peace, and MotherLove’s memoir Half the Mother, Twice the Love.
  • Book proposal consulting for Dr. Gail Parker's Restorative Yoga for Ethnic and Race-Based Stress and Trauma.

Editorial Leadership

Extensive experience as a senior-level editor for national publications. 

  • Executive Editor and Health Editor of Essence, responsible for content development, top-level editing, leading teams, managing budgets, for magazine reaching 1.2 million readers
  • Editor-in-Chief of HealthQuest: The Publication of Black Wellness, for a half-million health-aware women and men.
  • Contributing Editor for Health magazine, in charge of coverage of mental, emotional and spiritual health. 

Writing

Contribute articles about health, personal growth, family, relationships and other issues with a special focus on women and people of color. 

  • Work has appeared in major national magazines including Parenting, Health, Redbook, online in AARP’s Sisters Newsletter and in regional, niche and scholarly publications.
  • Received a Rosalynn Carter Fellowship in Mental Health Journalism in 2009 to write about mental wellness among African-American women and families.   

Tamara Jeffries is an Assistant professor of journalism at Bennett College for Women, with an

undergraduate degree in media arts and a master’s degree in Creative Nonfiction Writing.
